HSBC Brunei Awarded ASEAN Champions of Biodiversity for businessHSBC Brunei award ASEAN Champions

HSBC Brunei, Retail bank of the year 2010, added another accolade to its title when ASEAN Center of
Biodiversity awarded HSBC Brunei as the ASEAN Champion of Biodiversity in Business category.
The award ceremony was held in Dusit Thani Hotel in Manila.

The award organized by ASEAN Center for Biodiversity is a recognition program for ongoing projects
on Biodiversity conservation and advocacy in ASEAN. The award is aimed at generating greater leadership,
public and media awareness of the problems facing the region rich but highly threatened biodiversity and the
need for concerted effort in biodiversity conservation and advocacy.

HSBC Brunei was nominated into ASEAN Champion of Biodiversity by the Forestry Department, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources. HSBC's nomination was strongly supported by Dr Mike Kavanagh, Special Advisor, WWF Heart of Borneo Initiative and Dr Stuart Davis of Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute

.In Dr Mike Kavanagh letter of recommendation, he said "HSBC Brunei deserves to be considered for the ASEAN Champions of Biodiversity Award for its steadfast support of the Heart of Borneo initiative. HSBC was the first corporation to support the initiative back in April 2005 when the Ministry of Industry & Primary Resources (MIPR), aided by WWF, hosted an exploratory international workshop to look into the options for joint conservation and sustainable development of a forested landscape by the three countries on the island of Borneo."

While Dr Stuart Davies of Smithsonian said that "The establishment of the 25ha Forest Dynamic research plot by CTFS and University Brunei Darussalam in Kuala Belalong Research Center would not have been possible without the generous contribution from HSBC Brunei. The research will give insights to the impact of climate change on Brunei's forest and the result will benefit relevant authority in formulating the best policy to preserve the rich biodiversity that exist in Brunei's pristine forest"

In addition to the plaque and trophy, HSBC Brunei will also receive USD5,000.00 as part of this recognition.

My colleagues and I are extremely proud to have been recognized as Champion of Biodiversity in ASEAN. This award not only recognized all our hard work in the past, it will motivate us to do even more in the future. We will be channeling the prize money into an environment education program. We want to open the eyes of Bruneian youth to biodiversity treasure troves that exist a stone throw away from our own doorstep." remarked Lim Boon Teck, Manager Corporate Sustainability, HSBC Brunei.
